Civilworks' Role in Comcast’s Infrastructure Growth

Civilworks has performed civil/site design, permitting and construction related services on sites in Massachusetts and New Hampshire to provide broadband digital equipment “headend” facilities to supplement or replace existing telecommunication centers to support the continual growth of residential and commercial broadband high-speed internet service in the areas. Besides bringing fast and reliable internet and video services to Comcast customers, these facilities also provide life safety communication (E-911) to the communities served. The equipment housed in the buildings, including

various computerized equipment, operate without the need for any continual onsite monitoring or human presence. The buildings are connected, via underground conduit, to the existing fiber optic network located on power-lines in the roadways adjacent to the property. Like many commercial buildings, each headend is supported by generators in sound-protective enclosures to provide 24/7 all-weather service. Civilworks services have also included feasibility and conceptual design studies on several other potential headend sites.

Civilworks has also supported Comcast’s infrastructure work with the preparation of multiple Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) in accordance with rigorous Mass DOT standards. These TMPs are subject to review by Mass DOT to ensure protection of crews and safe passage for vehicles through work zones associated with new aerial fiber optic cable and system amplifier (“amp”) installations and upgrades.
